Children's Healthy Smile Project

Our Mission:

Improve basic oral hygiene and promote a healthy smile by providing oral hygiene supplies such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss and educational materials to children in need. Additionally, we provide trained volunteers to teach oral hygiene to parents and children. See "Our Projects" page for more information.

The Problem:

Many needy children who lack good basic oral hygiene habits or dental care can have severe tooth decay and gum disease which may result in physical pain or discomfort. In many cases, this leads to low self-esteem. Early intervention with education for both parent and child, plus basic oral hygiene supplies, can make a difference now and in the future. In 2010, over 3,000 needy children were provided "Smile Kits" and/or educational materials!! Additionally, a trained volunteer provided dental hygiene education to kindergarten children and Head Start preschool parents for Children's National Dental Health Month.

In 2011, Children's Healthy Smile Project served approximately 1,000 needy children during February, Children's Dental Healthy Month.

Dental students attending the University of Alabama Dental School distributed over 300 "Smile Kits" to children in a Birmingham neighborhood. Great job guys!!
